THE WORKING LABOUR
A traditional farmer harvesting the hay in the old-fashioned way. Nowadays this activity is done with machines but the smaller farms still use traditional ways to bring in the hay which will be used as fodder for the winter.
I saw this at an exhibition, in Moscow in 1989. I related this painting to working men in many countries around the world. I considered their daily work in the fields, harvesting crops in all weathers from dawn to dusk. Over the years of hard work their features weathered and beaten skin but yet a smile of satisfaction from a hard day’s work.
